Many UK retail parks, supermarkets, hospitals, and private car parks offer free or low-cost parking for a limited time — usually 1 to 3 hours. However, these car parks are often monitored by ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras or parking attendants.
If you stay beyond the allowed time — even by just a few minutes — you may receive a Parking Charge Notice (PCN) through the post or on your windscreen.
❗ Important: These are not the same as council-issued “Penalty Charge Notices.” Overstay fines from private companies are civil claims, not criminal offences — but they can still be legally enforceable.
